Rider on the Wheel

The title evokes movement, one of Nick Drake’s favourite themes. Someone who is in control, possibly. Or someone caught into some sort of momentum. The song is a calm sort of ballad. You can clearly hear the folk heritage here: it could have been written six or seven years earlier.
Knowing his ‘name’ returns, the reference to which first appeared on Chime. If again about identity, he is talking to someone who seems to understand him, to know him. But he adds ‘but I don’t feel the same’, as if saying that he wished he knew himself – something which he seems to have been striving to do.
But the song is also positive, indicating that it is a sort of present, a gift (‘it’s new for you’).
